I still remember that day when I saw Ken- Allan in the zoo. I was visiting that place with my little sister, who had never been there before. We started our trip seeing the polar bear with its splendid white fur, which was playing with its ball and diving into the water. Then, we went to observe the giraffes, my sister was very excited with them, because they were trying to get fruits from the nearest tree with his long neck, when my sight was squinted to the next cage. I took my sister and we went to see the animal that had caught my attention. My sister and I were too surprised to see an enormous animal so sad; his face has the appearance of claiming for something better, however we did not know what was truly happening to him. So, we stared at him for a while, his eyes were lost in the horizon and he seemed to be in somewhere else. At that time, we started to observe the place where he was; it was not the most suitable place for an orangutan because the cage was not bigger enough for him, it was empty with no colors to cheer him up and it was only a compact bed, the one where he could not use because it was so tiny in relation to the size of the animal, and it also does not contain even a branch of a tree to simulate his habitat. In that moment I realized that he was the animal who had escaped three times of his cage, and that he had also come back three times at that uncomfortable area. Suddenly, my sister looked at me and said that she knew why Ken-Allan had run away, it was because he wanted to be out of that cage and be free, as any animal deserves to be.
When I was child I remember that one day my father and I went to the Zoo, It was my first time in a place like that with a lot of marvelous animals. I could see monkeys, giraffes, different kind of birds, lions, etc. And when we found the monkeys place, I stared at one specific animal that called my attention because I had never seen an animal so happy and enjoying his life; his name was Ken-allan, he was 14 years old and he was an amazing orangutan. Ken-allan was living in a great place with different kinds of fruits and food. However, I noticed something strange. Since the day I saw ken-allan I couldn’t stop thinking about his look, when I was there staring at him, I realized that he was a nice orangutan, but the situation that concerned me was that Ken-allan was always trying to escape from the zoo. So, one day I decided to observe his behavior and look what ken-allan will do. All of a sudden, I saw in the other side of the cage a beautiful orangutan having a good time, playing with her toys and suddenly Ken-allan appeared and he was looking wishfully to this lovely orangutan, obviously it was a she, and then I could understand why the agog Ken-allan was always trying to escape.
I had been in the San Diego Zoo for over 15 years. Well, even though I had had plenty of fun with the visitors during the day, I came into a point where fun had been lost within time and routine.
Because of that, my friend Vicki and I, we designed a plan to escape from the zoo. Do not get me wrong, I am grateful with the zoo. They had take care of me since the day I arrived there, the thing is that you cannot expect that anyone will be happy ever after by; staying at the same place, doing the same things every day, or being locked up in such a small space. So, if no one accepts this as a way of living, why an orangutan should?
Coming back to our plan, we figured out that Jack, the night watchman, had to fix the artifacts or some cages. To do so, he had to carry his tools, among them there was a crowbar. Taking that into account, Vicki created a problem that needed to be fixed in our cage. On Sunday, after a long day of visits, Jack was more distracted than any other day. It was that night when he fixed our cage, while Vicki got close to him to play a bit, I took the crowbar as fast as possible then I hide it under my bed.
After Jack finished his work from that night, eventually, he went to the office and stay there for the rest of the night. We waited a couple of hours and finally, we escaped using the crowbar, bending the barriers in order to make a hole fit for our bulky bodies. The problem was that Jack was not in the office as we thought; he caught us in the act and our whole plan of starting a new and real life was ruined.
Bananas do not taste the same since our third failed attempt to escape with Vicky. If only we had gone faster, I would be telling another story. Everything began the day I received the sad news from Borneo; my mother was caught in the jungle by a group of hunters and I don’t know if she will survive or at least to suffer the same fate than me and be confined till the rest of her days. I’m not saying that this lifestyle is bad, it’s very fun and comfortable indeed and I was born to be attended and admired unlike my mother that loves the wildness and freedom. That is why I’m risking my comfy life, my mother needs me and I won’t give up. Vicky has been here in San Diego Zoo for 3 years and she can’t get used to this yet so she got very excited with my plan and she is now my accomplice. It has been fun though but I need to get out of here otherwise I will have lost my mum… This time I need a more daring plan, I need to threaten my own life in order to go to vet and then to escape to the airport; I’ve read that animals can fly with medicine so I just need to steal some pills from the vet and I will be ready… Catalina Ovando.
Today I am going to visit the zoo. There are a lot of animals that I never meet. Last Summer I went to the zoo because one of my dreams is meet an orangutan but, that day Ken-Allan, the orangutan of the zoo, ran away. It is a sunny day and I am ready to go with my parents to meet Ken-Allan. We were buying our tickets when I heard that someone said that for third time the orangutan escape. My mom asked about it and the zoo keeper tells her that Ken-Allen escaped yesterday and there is any problem now. I am so excited because I finally can meet the famous orangutan. Ken-Allan is 14 years old and come from Borneo. The orangutan is huge and has brown eyes. Also he looks sad. I think that Ken-Allan needs fun or maybe spend time outside in the country side or something that looks like his home. My dad spoke with his keeper and told him that Ken-Allan is too old to carry him to some place for that reason, the zoo give him all that he needs. I am happy due to I know that he is safe in the place that he is now. I am going to visit him again next Sunday. But this time I will give him a present.
I will never forget the first time that I visited the San Diego Zoo. Personally I hate the Zoos because I can stand to see animals locked up and out of their natural habitat, besides I consider that this practice is completely inhumane. So I felt completely guilty when I arrived there, but I couldn't say no to my dear Franco. I didn't enjoy the trip at all, I think my face looked like if I was suffering a terminal illness, but I couldn't hide my sorrow and concern. We went to see the lions, bears, elephants among others, and finally we arrived to the orangutans place. There was one in specific that called my attention. The orangutan had a sad expression in the face looking through the fence of its cage. I asked to one of the zookeepers about the orangutan and he told me that its name was Ken-Allan, and that it was there because it tried to escape three times. In that moment I started to think about it and the first word that crossed my mind was "freedom". I asked to Franco: Are zoo animals really happy? And he answers me: I have just realized they are not.
Hi, my name is Ken-Allan, I’m an orangutan and this is my story: I’ve been living in this zoo since I remember, I can’t keep being behind this bards, and I need fresh air, new adventures, risks and a ton of fun! I used to have a friend called Rascal 5 years older than me; a wise orangutan, he told me that he lived in a beautiful place where all animal were friends and that were more animals of our kind. I was so amazed of what we said that I think because of him and his stories I desire leave this place and experienced that freedom. One night he could escape and because of those zoo keepers always watch at me, and try that I don’t run away as Rascal. I know that one day I will leave this prison, even though I will have to plan a better strategy I will success and do whatever I want! If this time I don’t accomplish the plan I will stop trying and find a way to entertain myself here. If you think is not a bad place; zoo keeper bring me food every day three times a day and sometimes visitors do the same I can’t complain about everything, it could be worst but I just need something new… It’s showtime “time-to-leave-bars operation” just begins, wish me luck!
My brother invited me to the zoo yesterday, and I was really excited because I wanted to meet Ken-Allan a fourteen years old orangutan from Borneo. I have read a lot about him, about how he became so famous, and as I am a writer, I would like to make a little book about him, for kids. Actually, when I came, the first thing I did was go to the place where Ken-Allan was, I saw him but he looked very sad, well, he attempted to escape two times before, but I do not understand, if he tried to escape before, why the zoo authorities do not let him live in another place where he can be happy? Is that so hard for them?. Obviously, the most important in the book is how he escaped, according to the news, he found a workman´s crowbar and hid it, to crack a plexiglass window .But he did not do it alone, he was with a female accomplice named Vicki, thing that I found really amazing, because is extraordinary how an animal can fight for his freedom and the opportunity to be happy. I just hope that my book can reach the heart of the people especially of the kids, and that they support the idea of getting a better place for Ken- Allan and for every animal who want to be free.
I have tried to escape three times from this place. The zoo is not an adequate place for animals, especially for us because we need space for freedom. The room in which we live is smaller than a box of shoes. It is cold, awful and uncomfortable. I am between chains and railing. Could you imagine living in a place like this? I suppose you couldn’t. This is the reason why I and my partner Vicki have been running away all this time. Despite suffering because of this, I enjoy the visitors. They often bring chocolates and cookies for us, we love eating sweet things. However, workmen don’t allow us to eat these due to the fact they discuss that we are animals and we must not eat food for people. But they demand to act like people. Can you understand human being? In our routine, we have one day where we can walk around the zoo. One day, we were walking around the lions and we were surprised because of a huge fight among them. We don’t fight in that way, we are very friendly. Although some people say that we are so rude and impolite. Well, this time our action wasn’t successful, but I am sure that our next reaction will be victorious.
Well, as you can see I am an orangutan, my name is Ken-Allan and I want to tell you my experiences in this horrible place. First of all, I hate the food that the workman brings me everyday. It is the same dirt in the morning, in the afternoon and even in the night. I don’t understand why he brings me the identical food three times. I know that human beings can eat many different foods during the day and it is not important a specific timetable. Also, I think that it is necessary to change my habitat, my room because I spend the whole year in the same cage. Personally, I feel very bored staying here my 14 years of my life. Maybe if the zoo authorities improve their way to decorate our cages, we can feel comfortable in it. However, that is why I have tried to escape three times this year. I need something different, some new experiences to share with my friends. Vicky is one of my best friend and we are planning a new strategy to escape of this enclosure. We know that the previous attempts were failed, but the next one I am sure we are going to be free in a beautiful village. By: Julisa Vargas Barria
It was a cold day in San Diego, the snow covered the whole city and here I am, dwelling in this dirty cage. Since I was brought to this Zoo I haven’t been able to see de outside world as I used to do, but I’m sure I’ll be able to escape from this nightmare. I just woke up, 9:00 in the morning, people are starting to arrive and another day of being a goddammed-cute monkey who everybody loves has started. While I was watching a person with thick clothing due to de cold day, I recalled the old good days in the Amazonas; Bananas everywhere, palmers, vines to travel from one tree to another, my mother looking for lice in my whole body and sunny and warm temperatures every single day. That was the good life. They finally gave us some food, my roommates were happy as always because they don’t realize they are being exploited. When I thought everything was wrong for the rest of my life, I came across a crowbar just a few centimeters away from my cage; I took it up and started to plan my escape. A lady called Vicky, fond of animals, realized of my plans and decided to help me. We broke the glass, it was everything OK when suddenly the alarm sounds. It was everything lost for me and Vicky, who was sent to prison for my acts.
It is not everything said yet, I know that the day that I will finally set free, is near. Roberto Galindo
Let me present to all the community, my name it is Pedro. A lot of people think that I am too young to have my own family, but in my tribe I am actually an Adult. Well, I am not as any common person, I am shaggy, ugly, I do not have a Straight back and some people think of me as an uncivilized, but anyways I am the Alpha male of the Group, and doing happy my group I am happy too. Now the thing it is that no one believe that we are much more intelligent and talented than them. We are the processors of all the humans; we have a couple of chromosomes more than you, my dear human. Now tell me, if the nature makes of us a superior class biologically speaking, why you, one of our descendants, our heritage, treat us as your slaves. Have you ever think, if you had the opportunity of jailing your parents at a zoo, would you do it? I think you cannot. So why you jail us, the orangutans at so ugly place, to suffer under the gaze of your entire legacy, that forgot its past, and as consequence will not know how to behave in the future. Reflex about your past, and you will understand your future. Teach your children how to care of the old people like me. Actually I am twelve years old and as an old orangutan, I thought my descendants how to care of the community and of me. The most sincerely greetings for you my dear human, Pedro the Orangutan.
